Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located many other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
