Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within the city.
Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season are included.
The Warrior Group Unveiled
The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of characters who will split off from the central cast to begin their separate journey, distinct from the other two tables.
The Soldiers table includes the determined fighter (played by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).
The Reason for Division
Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at the same party would be impossible.
This explains, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Explorers.
What Defines the Warrior Group
Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who prefer a typically action-packed fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are scarce.
At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear unsuited, but the events of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to go next after a intense first encounter with the enemy group.
A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, entering the secret base, striking the character, and stealing all the powerful objects to sell off.
The antagonist then settled his liabilities and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.
Individual Reasons
Moreover, each adventurer has a specific drive to exit Dol-Makjar:
- The agile hero, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks vengeance.
- Kattigan knows the region and advises that it is a nasty environment.
- The warrior and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute Teor and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
- However, their position as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the group enter locations they normally couldn’t.
- Moreover, Teor swore a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that rule the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:
- The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
- The strong figure and The healer betrayed the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
- The fighter is wanted dead by House Halovar.
This leaves them no alternative but to travel to the northern region in search of the antagonist.
Upcoming Developments
According to the latest episode’s follow-up content, we learn that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to assemble the Seekers and Schemers groups.
Audiences can anticipate finding out which players will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
