Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
