New research indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
