As any significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
