This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
